NT-proBNP

A blood marker released when the heart is under strain - a quick way to check whether breathlessness or swelling could be heart-related.
TypeBlood biomarker
HowStandard blood draw.
How oftenWhen symptoms appear, or to follow known heart failure.
BeforeNo special preparation.
WhoPeople with breathlessness, swollen ankles or known heart risk.

A signal your heart sends when it’s under strain

When heart muscle is stretched by extra pressure or fluid, it releases a hormone. NT-proBNP measures it - a simple blood test that helps rule heart failure in or out when you’re breathless.
Low result
“Is it my heart?”
Makes heart failure unlikely.
Rule out
Raised result
“What next?”
Usually leads to an echocardiogram to look at the heart directly.
Look closer
Over time
“Is treatment working?”
Tracking it shows whether strain is easing.

Age, kidney function and weight affect the result, so it’s always read in context.

Is it right for you?

Worth considering if…

  • You’re breathless or tire easily on exertion.
  • Your ankles are swelling.
  • You have diabetes, high blood pressure or known heart disease and your provider wants a strain check.

A better option if…

  • You have no symptoms and low risk - routine testing isn’t usually needed.
  • You need to see heart structure directly - that’s an echocardiogram.

How it’s measured

Lab blood draw
Often available same day in clinics and hospitals.

The full picture

What is it?
A fragment of a hormone released by heart muscle when it’s stretched or strained.
What type of test is it?
A blood biomarker.
What does it measure?
NT-proBNP concentration in pg/mL.
Why might someone consider it?
A normal result makes heart failure much less likely; a high one points toward further tests.
Who is it most relevant for?
People with symptoms that could be heart-related.
How is it performed?
A routine blood draw.
How often might it be considered?
When symptoms change or to monitor treatment.
What can the result help you understand?
Whether your heart may be under strain.
What are its limitations?
It rises with age and kidney disease and can be lower in people with obesity, so cut-offs depend on context.
What should it be viewed with?
Symptoms, echocardiogram, kidney function, ECG and blood pressure.

Where to get it

Through your provider
The simplest route - often covered when there’s a clear reason.
Lab services
e.g. Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp.
Direct-to-consumer panels
e.g. Function Health, InsideTracker.
Names are examples only, not endorsements. Your provider can often order the same test - and help interpret it.
